Divergent Catholic sub-cultures in the US
2012 Doctor's Degree Dissertation Study
The study investigated how the Roman Catholic Church governs the divergent Catholic cultural groups in the U.S. Subcultures examined included, the Spanish, French, Irish, German, Polish, and Italians. Special emphasis was placed on the multi-dimensional governance relationships that existed between U.S. subcultures and the Vatican. Results show that the nature of these relationships was of a negotiated order and varied depending on circumstances of the divergent subcultures.
Implication:
Leaders in the Roman Catholic Church need to learn how to negotiate their clerical status and cultural affiliation because, whereas the church controls the production of clerics, the subculture will only accept a cleric who is cognizant of its cultural peculiarities.
